about

Soundtrack 1: Schwelen is a compelling document of Psycho & Plastic's recent compositions for contemporary dance performance SCHWELEN by systemrhizoma. The music revolves around the performance's main themes of the witch-hunt, of defamation, scapegoating, hate, and violence. Discomforting at times, it is an atmospheric and dense sonic representation of the irrational behaviour societies revert to when faced with invisible threats. The relevance of this EP extends beyond its original purpose, and well into the bleak political realities of our Covid-ridden times.

Psycho & Plastic already proved their perseverant creative spirit during Germany's first lockdown in spring 2020. The spontaneous creation and release of their ambient album, Placid House not only won them praise and new listeners. It also prompted systemrhizoma to commission Thomas Tichai and Alexandre Decoupigny to compose for SCHWELEN.

On “Stigma” and “Asche” Psycho & Plastic display their ambient sensibilities with atmospheric synthesisers, digitally treated pianos, and electric guitars. Both compositions rely heavily on harmonic ambiguity, which lends them an eerie and ominous air. “Hetze” and “Schlacke” add jagged rhythms, unsettling the ear with odd time signatures. Alluding to the stake, Psycho & Plastic use processed field recordings of twigs and branches instead of percussion sounds. While “Hetze” is literally the sound of being hunted, closing track “Schlacke” instills the foreboding sense that the psychological principles of the witch-hunt are secretly smouldering inside of all of us.

This EP is a testimonial of Psycho & Plastic's ever growing artistic vision and perseverance. In an otherwise gig- and festival-less summer, the duo successfully expanded into the realms of soundtrack work. The universality of the underlying themes lets the music resonate beyond the scope of the theatre production it accompanied. With Soundtrack 1: Schwelen, Psycho & Plastic take musical and emotional inventory of society's toxic climate in times of a pandemic.
